Mount Matavanu

Savai'i

Mt Matavanu crater was a roaring, exploding volcano from 1905 to 1911 which sent molten lava flowing to the coast 13 kilometres to the north east, destroying everything in its path as evident in the village of Saleaula today. From the village of Safotu, the crater is easily accessible by 4WD. The drive to the walking track takes about 20-25 minutes and the walk 2-3 hours return (6km). At the peak of the crater is a magnificent, breathtaking view of Savai'i western villages. TAL$20 per person
