The view before you is the sacred district of Keia and the taro plantations of our people. The maraes of Aka'oro, Tukitukimata, Mara, Araata, Maraeara, Mautokerau and Rangita'ua encircles the area. In pre-Christian times our people live in settlements around their taro plantations. Aka'oro was home of the Ariki-Pa-Uta (Inland High Priest). The Maraes of Aka'oro and Orongo on the coast served as ceremonial grounds for rituals concerning the investiture of chiefs and establishment of political rule on Mangaia.
